How to Pray for Your Husband: A Simple Daily Guide

Praying for your husband changes your marriage — and your own heart. A simple daily guide to how to pray for your husband, with a weekly rhythm you can actually keep.

I remember the season I realized I complained about my husband more than I prayed for him. Not proud of it — but it was true. It is so easy to notice the things that annoy us, to keep a quiet mental list of where he falls short, and to almost never take those very same things to the Lord instead.

Praying for your husband is one of the most powerful, most overlooked things you can do for your marriage. It changes him, yes — but it also changes you. It is awfully hard to stay irritated with a man you are faithfully lifting up before God — prayer is quietly one of the best ways to build a Christ-centered marriage. Prayer softens our own hearts as much as it invites God to work in his.

If you want to pray for your husband but never quite know where to start or how to stay consistent, here is a simple daily guide you can actually keep.

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
— James 5:16 (ESV)

Start small and consistent

You do not need an hour or a fancy system. You need a small, repeatable habit. One or two minutes a day, prayed consistently, will do far more for your marriage than an occasional marathon prayer session.

Anchor it to something you already do — while the coffee brews, during his morning commute, as you fold his laundry, or right before you fall asleep. Attach the new habit to an existing one and it will actually stick.

What to pray for — a simple daily rhythm

If you like a little structure, try praying through a different area each day of the week. It keeps your prayers from getting stuck in a rut and covers the whole man over time:

His walk with God. That he would love the Lord, hunger for His Word, and lead your family from a heart that is close to God. This is the root everything else grows from.

His role as husband and father. For wisdom, patience, and tenderness with you and the kids. That he would feel equipped, not overwhelmed, in leading your home.

His work. For strength, integrity, and favor in his job. That he would work heartily as unto the Lord and find purpose in providing.

His mind and heart. Against discouragement, temptation, and the weight men so often carry silently. For peace, joy, and protection over his thoughts.

His health and rest. For his body, his energy, and genuine rest — the physical stamina to do all he is called to do.

Your marriage. For unity, deeper friendship, forgiveness where it is needed, and a love that keeps growing. For protection over your covenant.

Thanksgiving. One day a week, just thank God for him — naming specific things you appreciate. This one quietly transforms how you see him.

Pray Scripture over him

When you do not have words of your own, borrow God’s. Praying Scripture is one of the surest ways to pray with confidence, because you are praying God’s own heart back to Him. Pray Philippians 1:9 that his love would abound, Ephesians 3:16 that he would be strengthened with power in his inner being, or Numbers 6:24–26 that the Lord would bless and keep him. Slip his name right into the verse and watch how personal it becomes.

Pray even — especially — when it is hard

Some days you will not feel like praying for him. The days you are hurt, frustrated, or distant are exactly the days prayer matters most. You do not have to feel warm toward him to bring him before God. In fact, praying for a husband you are frustrated with is one of the fastest ways God softens a hard heart — usually starting with your own. Bring the frustration honestly to the Lord, and let Him do the work only He can do.
