There’s something almost rebellious about making sour cream at home.
It’s one of those things we’ve always just grabbed from the store without thinking.
But once you realize how simple it is?
You may never buy it again.
No additives.
No thickeners.
No mystery ingredients.
Just cream and culture.
And a jar on your counter.
Why Make Sour Cream at Home?
Because it’s:
- Simple
- Cheaper long-term
- Cleaner ingredients
- More flavorful
- A small step toward self-sufficiency
If you’ve already started making homemade yogurt or a sourdough starter, this fits right into those rhythms.
It’s another quiet habit that builds a homestead lifestyle — even if you only have a few chickens and a steady kitchen counter.
What You’ll Need
Ingredients
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1–2 tablespoons plain yogurt (with live active cultures)
(You can use your homemade yogurt here 👀)
That’s it.
Tools
- Loose lid or towel
- Wide Mouth Mason Jars
- Glass Storage Lids
- Small Whisk
- Heavy Cream (if linking grocery options)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Combine
Pour 1 cup heavy cream into your mason jar.
Add 1–2 tablespoons plain yogurt.
2. Stir
Stir gently until combined.
It doesn’t need to be whipped — just incorporated.
3. Cover & Rest
Loosely cover with a lid or towel.
Let sit at room temperature for 12–24 hours.
The longer it sits, the tangier it becomes.
4. Refrigerate
Once thickened to your liking, refrigerate for several hours to firm up further.
That’s it.
You just made sour cream.
How Long Does It Last?
Homemade sour cream will keep for about 1–2 weeks in the refrigerator.
If it smells off or shows mold, discard.
But in most homes? It doesn’t last that long.
Ways We Use Homemade Sour Cream
- Tacos
- Baked potatoes
- Chili
- Mixed into scrambled eggs (especially with fresh eggs from the coop 🤍)
- Added to baked goods for moisture
- Mixed with herbs for a simple dip
Once you start making it, you realize how often you reach for it.
A Small Step Toward Intentional Living
There’s something beautiful about looking at a jar in your fridge and knowing:
“I made that.”
No land required.
No cow in the pasture.
Just willingness.
And when you line it up next to homemade yogurt and a bubbling sourdough starter?
Your kitchen begins to feel alive.
Faith Reflection
“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.” – Zechariah 4:10
Small beginnings matter.
A jar of sour cream.
A fed starter.
A counter used faithfully.
Little acts of stewardship grow into something bigger than we imagine.

Alternative Method (Quick Version)
If you don’t have yogurt on hand, there’s another simple way to make a sour cream substitute using ingredients you may already have.
This version isn’t cultured the same way, but it works beautifully in a pinch.
You’ll Need:
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1–2 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar (or lemon juice)
How to Make It
- Pour heavy whipping cream into a jar or bowl.
- Stir in the milk.
- Add vinegar (or lemon juice) and stir gently.
- Let sit at room temperature for 10–15 minutes.
It will slightly thicken and develop a mild tang.
For a thicker consistency, refrigerate for about an hour before using.
When to Use This Version
This quick method is great for:
- Baking
- Topping tacos or chili
- Mixing into dips
- When you need sour cream immediately
If you’re building long-term kitchen rhythms, I still recommend the cultured yogurt method. It creates deeper flavor and supports gut health naturally.
But sometimes we just need something simple.
And that’s okay too.
